Florida A&M University (FAMU) is bringing its recruitment efforts to Tampa Bay this November.
Representatives from the historically Black university will visit St. Petersburg College's Gibbs Campus on Nov. 18, followed by a recruitment stop at the Shanna and Bryan Glazer JCC in Tampa on Nov. 20.
The university's November recruitment schedule also includes stops at Polk State College in Winter Haven on Nov. 17 and the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando on Nov. 20. Recruitment efforts will continue in Orlando on Nov. 21 during the Florida Classic at Camping World Stadium.
The visits are part of FAMU's expanded recruitment strategy, which includes college fairs, high school visits and outreach events. For Tampa Bay students and families considering FAMU, the events offer an opportunity to connect directly with university representatives, ask questions about admissions and financial aid, and explore academic programs and student organizations.
“FAMU’s recruitment has evolved from a more traditional, relationship-driven approach into a more intentional, data-informed enrollment strategy — while still drawing on the power of the Rattler brand, alumni network and HBCU mission,” William E. Hudson Jr., Ph.D., who is FAMU’s vice president for Student Affairs, said in a news release.
For the fall 2026 semester, FAMU received more than 32,000 applications, resulting in an incoming class of more than 1,900 first-time college students. U.S. News and World Report recently ranked FAMU No. 79 on their 2027 list of top public HBCUs and the No. 1 HBCU.
While data helps shape FAMU's recruitment strategy, student leaders say personal connections remain an important part of introducing prospective students to the university.
Jordyn Anderson, the 120th Miss Florida A&M University and a fourth-year marketing student, participates in recruitment tours.
“I remember what it felt like to be a prospective student trying to picture myself at FAMU, and now I have the opportunity to help other students see themselves here,” Anderson said.
The university also uses digital platforms to connect with prospective students and their families and continues to diversify their outreach. Last month, FAMU announced a partnership with Valencia College. The partnership, which is being called the 2+2 pathway, would allow Valencia students with an associate in arts or associate in science degree to transition into designated FAMU baccalaureate programs.
“Our goal is to continue to recruit the best and brightest students at the undergraduate and graduate level,” Hudson said. “Enrollment management is more than one person, one department or one division. Every FAMU constituent has a role.”
